This project creates a new volumetry in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, together with new road and pedestrian axes that improve the quality of life of residents.
The site where the urban intervention takes place will be served by existing roads to the south and west, and by a third one to the north which will connect them and become one of the main access roads to the city centre. The building on the site was designed to respond and adapt to this new centrality, as a living monument in the centre of a square, intended to be both imposing and integrated. Planned for senior residences, the building is surrounded by a generous landscaped square, a space for socialising and enjoyment for both residents and city dwellers. Preserving and promoting public pedestrian space and a living and breathing city, the building's height is aligned with neighbouring buildings. The whole project is developed around this communal and shared experience, typical of new ways of living.
On level -1, in addition to a gymnasium, the first units with private exterior terraces appear to the east. On the ground floor are the common areas, such as the restaurant with a terrace opening onto the landscaped square at the entrance, the activity centre and all the support infrastructure for the proper functioning of these spaces. The smaller apartments are located on the first floor, introducing the structural metric that defines the layout of all the others over the remaining nine floors.
The language of the façades is marked by a contemporary orderliness, a solid, monolithic volume that allows itself to be rhythmically punctuated by openings, a reflection of a living city in constant movement. The tile skin balances the façade’s robustness while the granite pays homage to the materiality and texture of the surrounding city.
