Enjoyment of open, transparent spaces facing the landscape

The Abuxarda 1 residence is located in the Portuguese town of Cascais. With a design in which form follows function to adapt to its natural setting, the house incorporates large windows aimed directly at primary views, providing for seamless indoor-outdoor opportunities in the privacy of the pine forest. While the exterior of the building is fully cladded with natural materials such as wood and stone, the roof is partially covered with a living surface, providing great thermal resistance and landscape value.

The house’s formal programmatic approach involves insertion in a sloping terrain, positioning the main entrance and driveway in an in-between part of the building. The ground level, partially buried, is open plan, allowing fluidity among the living room and the other social areas. The bedrooms are located on the upper floor, linearly organised and distributed by a common corridor.
