António Granjo

The principal façade of the building highlights the pre-existing structure, with the restoration and reproduction of construction elements and details characteristic of its industrial past, such as the industrial chimney and the metal trusses of the former factory buildings.
The main pedestrian and vehicular access is via Rua António Granjo, in Porto. Along this street frontage, there is a multifamily residential building with 16 apartments and a student residence. Within the inner courtyard of the block, the student residence extends across several volumes. The principal façade of the building highlights the pre-existing structure, with the restoration and reproduction of construction elements and details characteristic of its industrial past, such as the industrial chimney and the metal trusses of the former factory buildings. On the third floor, integrated into the roof, a contemporary architectural language is adopted, characterised by zinc-clad mansard roofs in the same colour as the external window frames. This coexistence emphasises the dialogue between the pre-existing structure and the new construction, revealing a sense of complementarity and integration between all these elements and their surroundings.

Beyond the courtyards, the size of the plot allows for the creation of an extensive shared outdoor area, featuring paved and lawned zones. The landscape design
incorporates some of the existing trees, such as the orange tree, beech, and poplar, as well as the locally sourced stone, which is given new prominence in the retaining walls. This approach, by reusing materials already present on-site, preserves the memory of the space.
