Estádio Nacional

The intervention as an act of continuity

An icon of Portuguese sports architecture, the stadium stands out for its monumental presence and harmonious integration into the landscape of the Jamor valley.

Respect for the pre-existence and volumetric hierarchy is key to ensuring that the stadium remains a landmark in Portuguese architectural heritage, updated to meet the demands of the present without losing its original spirit.

Estádio Nacional's rehabilitation project arises from the delicate encounter between the monumentality of this icon of Portuguese sports architecture and the necessary reconfiguration to meet contemporary challenges. With the aim of ensuring continuity with the original design, the proposal reinforces the use of stone and maintains the imposing volume, while introducing modern solutions that ensure the functionality and comfort of the space, creating a harmonious dialogue with the stadium and respecting its hierarchical structure. A distinct solution was sought, one that would reinforce the architectural values that were central to the original spirit of the National Stadium project, which integrates the building and the landscape as an inseparable whole. In line with the initial concept by Caldeira Cabral, the landscape intervention, developed by Francisco Caldeira Cabral, plays a key role in the integration of the landscape.
The proposal is divided into several functional areas, focusing on preserving the stadium's identity while introducing innovative elements that improve accessibility and integrate the natural surrounding environment.
Aiming to rehabilitate, expand, and modernise this emblematic piece of Portuguese architecture, this proposal was developed in partnership with 92 Arquitectos, FIA - Fenwick Iribarren Architects, Francisco Caldeira Cabral and Elsa Severino, TAL Projecto, and PROJECTUAL. The proposal was ranked second in the national competition for the rehabilitation of the Estádio Nacional.

The proposal is not an imposition or an attempt to radically transform what already exists, but rather a gesture that, in its essence, is discreet yet assertive, reinforcing the original prominence of the space.

This is not just an architectural intervention, but an action on the public space that impacts how users perceive the stadium as a whole.
