Modular stools
The concept of transformation and evolution, combined with the shape of the circle, inspired a set of seating modules that adapt and interlock, creating a unique composition with every interaction. Each curve, each detail, is a celebration of simplicity and authenticity.
Every action, every gesture, every creation we undertake leaves an imprint on the world. This principle has guided our journey over the past 30 years and is embodied in every element created for these celebrations. Beyond shaping spaces, we seized the opportunity to design striking, multifunctional furniture. Instead of renting all the furniture or producing single-use pieces, each item was conceived to serve a purpose in the daily life of the atelier, regardless of events, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. A highlight of this endeavor is the creation of a set of cork seating modules, a material both resilient and adaptable. Each piece originates from the circle, reimagining it through organic forms inspired by the constant flow of nature. Whether as individual units or as a set, these pieces convey a sense of movement, transformation, and a journey of continuous learning and adaptation.

We spoke with Délio Carquejo, Director of the Cincork Training Centre, about the production process behind these pieces.
Why did you choose cork as the material for these benches? Can you tell us more about the manufacturing process and how this material shapes the final product?
Cork, often called Portugal’s “gold,” is an extraordinary natural resource. Using it for projects like the Fragmentos cork benches offers multiple advantages. The manufacturing process involves several stages, beginning with the extraction of cork from cork oak trees. This harvesting process doesn’t harm the tree, allowing it to regenerate and produce more cork. After extraction, the cork is ground and granulated to form different shapes. For the benches, the cork is molded into blocks, which are then cut and refined to shape the bench structure. Specific binders may be used to ensure the product’s durability and strength. Cork's properties—lightweight, durable, and excellent thermal and acoustic insulation—profoundly influence the final product. Additionally, as a sustainable and recyclable material, cork supports a more eco-friendly production process, reducing environmental impact.
How do you view the collaboration between Cincork, Amorim as a leading cork producer, and a client like Fragmentos?
The synergy between Cincork, Amorim, and Fragmentos is mutually enriching. At Cincork, we focus on providing top-tier training in cork craftsmanship and innovation, fostering both technical expertise and sustainable practices. Amorim brings industry-leading experience and market insights, which are invaluable for projects like these. Fragmentos, in turn, gains access to expertly crafted, sustainable cork products tailored to their design and functional needs. This partnership fosters a virtuous cycle where education, production, and application intersect. It positions all parties at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, creating high-quality, environmentally responsible products that meet modern market demands.
Do you foresee a growing trend toward natural and sustainable materials like cork in architecture and furniture design?
Absolutely. The demand for natural and sustainable materials is on the rise, driven by environmental awareness and a shift towards responsible consumption. Cork, being eco-friendly, recyclable, and versatile, is perfectly positioned to meet these demands. Its unique properties—lightweight, durable, thermally and acoustically insulating, and hypoallergenic—make it ideal for various applications in architecture and design. Innovation in the cork industry is another catalyst. Advances in research and development are leading to new products and applications, from aerospace technology to composite polymers for transportation. These innovations unlock even more potential for cork in diverse fields. Cork is increasingly seen as a symbol of sustainability and environmental stewardship, qualities that resonate strongly with the values of new generations. As awareness of the planet's fragility grows, the preference for sustainable, socially, and environmentally responsible solutions will only deepen.
