The book
1994 – 2024
In January 2023, the first draft of what would become this book was conceived. Over 16 months, 30 years were distilled into its pages. The book, as an object, reflects the archaeological exercise we undertook, embracing the triad as its structural marker — the formative years, the transformative years, and the innovative years — interwoven with the story of the past 30 years of architecture in Portugal. Through the transitions between decades, named after their most defining events, Fragmentos’ history intertwines with that of many other national studios. The Azores Earthquake (1998), the Subprime Crisis (2008), investments in Angola (2012), and the Covid-19 pandemic (2020) are some of the pivotal moments explored. Marking the beginning of each decade is a blue notebook, punctuating the structure. Blue opens and closes the monograph, flowing from the pages to the cover in a seamless gesture. This is a book about projects and people, but above all, about processes and the stories behind them. This concept is reflected in the tone of the texts, the inclusion of testimonials from those who shaped these decades, the use of sketches and illustrations, and the object itself — a bold, minimalist, irreverent cover that reveals an exposed spine when opened.

The book was born from a deliberate introspective exercise, a desire to reflect on the role of the architect, which often extends into so many other realms. We have been, and continue to be, psychologists, poets, archaeologists, friends. This foundation is what defines us and underpins everything we do.
