ArchiNews n.º70

The latest issue of ArchiNews focuses on the work of Fragmentos.

Thirty years ago, four young architects, Duarte Pinto-Coelho, Marcus Cerdeira, Miguel Martins Santos and Pedro Silva Lopes, decided to start something together. They would meet in the evenings, after their work at other studios, driven by a genuine and shared enthusiasm for architecture. This was how Fragmentos was born: out of friendship, a collective idea, and a unique pleasure in thinking, designing and building together.

Today, that collective has grown and we are more than 60, but the founding values remain alive. We continue to believe in architecture built through dialogue and commitment. And we keep making the relationships we establish - with clients, teams, and the city - the very foundation of our projects. From our earliest works to the most recent projects for residential buildings, hotels, public facilities and urban planning, the diversity of Fragmentos’ work reveals a practice that has evolved without losing its identity. The integration of engineering within the studio in 2019 was a decisive step in this journey, deepening the collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of our work.

This edition was born at a turning point: thirty years of working together. A publication that serves as an exercise in memory and recognition, because each project is also a reflection of a phase, an idea, a team. And because for us, creating architecture is also about leaving a mark, be it in the city, in the territory, and in the people we encounter along the way. Here, we revisit the history of Fragmentos through a selection of projects created over these 30 years of architecture. But more than looking back, this monograph projects what is yet to come. Because the future is built on who we have been — and all that we still can be.

Issue No. 70 of ArchiNews is available online and at various national outlets, notably at the Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos, the A+A Bookshop of the Order of Architects in Lisbon, and the Bookshop of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Porto.
