Alecrim 51

In Alecrim, project located in the heart of Misericórdia, Lisbon, the starting point is the character of the building, reinforced by a clear intervention: to recover the original identity of a Pombaline building, improve its performance and restore quality to everyday use. The proposal reorganises the interior according to a precise logic, taking advantage of the depth of the plot and the dual frontage onto Rua do Alecrim and Rua das Flores. A central courtyard is introduced, structuring circulation and benefiting the surrounding apartments by providing natural light. The building now comprises eight apartments across the upper floors, while retail use is maintained on the lower levels, in a separate unit with preserved vaulted ceilings. The rehabilitation adopts a vertical organisational strategy, concentrating infrastructure and ensuring functional coherence throughout the building. At roof level, the design is treated as an integral part of the intervention: the introduction of a mansard roof, the redesign of the dormer windows and the creation of a winter garden improve the use of the top floor, enhance natural light and reinforce the building’s relationship with the surrounding urban fabric.
