Estádio Nacional

Respect for the pre-existence and volumetric hierarchy is key to ensuring that the stadium remains a landmark in Portuguese architectural heritage, updated to meet the demands of the present without losing its original spirit.
The rehabilitation project of the National Stadium arises from the delicate balance between the monumentality of this iconic piece of Portuguese sports architecture and the reconfiguration of the space to meet contemporary challenges. With a commitment to maintaining continuity with the original design, the proposal reinforces the use of stone and preserves the imposing volumetry while introducing modern solutions that ensure functionality and comfort. This approach creates a harmonious dialogue with the stadium, respecting its hierarchical structure. The aim was to develop a distinctive solution that nonetheless reinforces the architectural values embedded in the original vision of the National Stadium — a design that treats the building and landscape as an inseparable whole. In line with the original concept, the landscape intervention, developed by Francisco Caldeira Cabral, plays a fundamental role in integrating the natural surroundings.
