Gomes Freire 5

Next to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, in the centre of Lisbon, this duplex apartment occupies the top floor of a recently refurbished 1940s building, with a 360º view over the city.

The house opens onto two terraces, one at each end. To the east, a terrace of around 30 sq m looks out over the hills of Graça and St George's Castle; to the west, a second terrace, of almost 90 sq m, stretches out over the hills of Príncipe Real and Estrela. Between the two, the house works almost like a viewpoint, panoptic over Lisbon. The apartment is arranged over two floors, linked by a timber staircase, with a living room on each level. Upstairs, a library occupies part of the space, with a floor-to-ceiling built-in oak bookcase. The flooring, also in oak parquet blocks, runs throughout the house, from the living rooms to the bedrooms. The rooms, generous and comfortable throughout, follow a carefully considered choice of materials: travertine lines the bathrooms from floor to walls, and oak reappears in the kitchen. Smooth white walls, and built-in doors and wardrobes in a discreet design, keep the focus on materiality. The whole apartment fills with sunlight, with wide openings at both ends of the house that let the city in.
