Junqueira 307

The intervention seeks to maintain the scale and presence of the original building (the former Mitera warehouses and shop, an iconic Lisbon store dedicated to plastics, vinyls and PVC) while introducing a contemporary organisation capable of responding to today’s ways of living.

Inside, spaces are organised in a functional and flexible way, prioritising spatial flow, natural light and the relationship with private outdoor areas. The proximity to Quake also reinforces an intention of continuity along the street. Although the two projects are very different (housing / cultural equipment, rehabilitation / new construction) both integrate harmoniously into the volumetry of Rua da Junqueira. The same timber, with the same appearance, was used in the screening elements of the courtyards and on the roof structures of both buildings, creating a visual link between two spaces that directly relate to one another and promoting a sense of continuity. On the roof, the project creates a shared space where the swimming pool and landscaped areas reinforce the idea of a building that is lived in beyond the limits of the dwelling itself, offering a new way of experiencing the city from above and allowing the horizon to open up.

The proposal is structured around a clear system of courtyards, terraces and outdoor spaces, ensuring natural light, ventilation and direct relationships between interior and exterior.

This approach allows for a more open reading of the building, enhancing the spatial quality of each dwelling and creating different possibilities of use throughout the day. The extension is discreetly set back behind the original façade, respecting the existing alignments and surrounding volumetry, while introducing a contemporary language, expressed through the refinement of the façades and the careful use of materials.
