Muda
The project designs several houses in Aldeia da Muda, on the Alentejo coast, between Comporta and Melides. The starting point was the place itself: the terrain, the views, the vegetation and the solar orientation determined where each house sits. The concept is a simple, pared-back architecture connected to the landscape. The "less is more" principle applies to the form of the houses, the materials, the colours and the relationship with the outdoors. All the houses have a single storey, which keeps the scale low and makes the treetops the tallest element of the development. The house types differ from one another, to welcome different resident profiles, and the houses are intended to work both as second homes and as main residences, encouraging community and a sense of permanence.
Privacy between houses is achieved through the orientation of each house, the position of the gardens, the vegetation and the framing of views. Boundaries between plots are formed by planting, with no walls or fences, in a fluid proposal. The development is not a gated community: it has no physical boundary with the surrounding community, and is a village in the true sense. The interior architecture was developed together with the architecture. The kitchen is part of the social area, separate from the private zone, and storage is built into the joinery. The materials are timber and natural stone, with terracotta floor tiles (tijoleira) outdoors, in a palette of sand, beige and warm grey. Large glazed openings connect the interior to the private patios and gardens, opening the house to the outdoors and blurring the boundary between inside and out.
