INCORPORATION

In 1826, Niépce captured the view from his window in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes. What would later be considered the first photograph in history is, in fact, an architectural photograph. Photography isolates, interprets, and creates value. Two architects turned photographers discuss the relationship between the object and its representation.

Rasmus Hjortshøj is a Danish architect, photographer, and researcher. His work explores the relationship between architecture and the landscape, with a particular focus on coastal areas. He founded COAST, a multidisciplinary research project that fosters collaborations between academia, photography, and architecture.

Francisco Nogueira graduated in architecture in 2008 and began working as a photographer in the same year. His work focuses on architecture, interiors, and artificial landscapes. He has published two photography books and, in 2018, held his first solo exhibition, Man, Made, at Artroom in Lisbon.

FROM FRAGMENTOS TO LISBON

The 30th anniversary is a milestone in the life of Fragmentos, and as such, we want to leave a mark of gratitude on the city that welcomed us and witnessed much of our growth over these three decades. We offer Lisbon, its gardens, and its inhabitants a piece for everyone to enjoy. What does it mean to offer Lisbon and its inhabitants a piece to be enjoyed and used? What are the city's needs, and how can initiatives like this contribute to improving the quality of life for Lisbon's residents?

Nuno Morais is an architect and consultant specializing in urban planning. With a career marked by 28 years of service at the Lisbon City Council, where he held leadership roles for 21 years in key areas of urban rehabilitation and planning. He served as Director of the Historic Center Intervention Unit, Director of the Urban Rehabilitation Department, and Director of the Urban Licensing Department, playing a crucial role in the transformation and revitalization of the city. His experience has left a significant mark on various strategic phases of Lisbon's urban renewal over the past decades.

Maria do Rosário Jacinto is an associate architect at Fragmentos. She holds a degree in Urban Management Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (2007). She has collaborated with the 3XN studio in Copenhagen and with GSS Architects. In 2013, she founded the project Moid, my own idea, and in the same year, she joined the Fragmentos team. In 2018, she became an associate architect and took on the responsibility for Communication. She is also a professor of Urban Planning Project at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.

Miguel Martins Santos is an architect and one of the founding partners of Fragmentos. He holds a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (1994). In the early years of his career, he collaborated with studios such as Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, PMC Architects, and Carvalheira Architects. CREATION

From the creative act to the establishment of a studio, two studios with different experiences and at different stages of their journey share their ideas about the creative act, the process of creation, and the challenges of balancing creativity with business.

João de Oliveira Ribeiro and Diogo Menéres Pimentel are the founders of CO.RP Arquitetos, an architecture studio based in Lisbon. They describe the studio's working methodology as a balance between idealism and reality, using a critical perspective that enables them to uncover yet-to-be-discovered realities.

Fragmentos was founded in 1994 by three architect friends eager to design together. Today, alongside Duarte Pinto-Coelho, Marcus Cerdeira, Miguel Martins Santos, and Pedro Silva Lopes, the team has grown to more than 60 people. With a holistic approach focused on people and sustainability, Fragmentos tells its story not only through the diverse projects it develops across different scales and geographies but also through the strength of the relationships it has built over the past three decades.

Book launch

1994-2024

This book emerges from a conscious introspective exercise, a desire to reflect on the architect’s role, which unfolds into many others. We have been, and often still are, psychologists, poets, archaeologists, friends. This is our foundation and what underpins everything. Therefore, the projects we have completed serve as starting points rather than endpoints. They do not constitute an end in themselves, but rather provide clues about who we are and who we have become in the various phases of our lives, in the different lives we have lived. Each project reveals something of what lies behind and is reflected in a chronology that, coincidentally or not, unfolds almost naturally over three decades.
