A new entryway for the town of Cascais

This challenging project to redevelop the eastern entrance to Cascais began in 2015. On the block of the former Jumbo hypermarket, an area of approximately 50,000 m2, four zones with different uses were defined, flanked by pedestrian walks and green areas for leisure, in a new formal and spatial relationship with the surroundings and the town.

In partnership with NEXT Architects, a phased action plan for the necessary construction works was created, minimising the visual and environmental impact inherent to this type of project and allowing the Jumbo hypermarket and all its dependent areas to remain in operation at all times.

The predominant image of this entire block is to be that of an ample green space for public and private use next to the residential units. Despite their formal diversity, all residential buildings share large glazed openings that bring the outdoors and the proximity to the sea into the interior of the dwellings. The new public green space will have a special visual impact in relation to the Estrada Marginal, creating a barrier to protect and integrate the classified heritage of the Palmela Palace and Chalet Faial.

Landscaped roofs, green spaces for leisure and areas for pedestrian circulation integrate the urban solution into the current urban context, allowing the housing component to be reconciled with commercial and other activities.

The works are estimated to conclude in 2025.
